Calculator for Percent of Percent

Calculates, how many percent remain, if a percentual fraction of a percentual share is taken. A percentage calculation will be performed twice in a row. Please enter two of the three values, Please enter two values, the third percent value will be calculated.

% of % is %.

Example: you get 30 percent of a 25 percent share. Those are 7.5 percent of the total.

The calculation works as follows: when the first two values are entered, these percentages are calculated to one, this means they are divided by 100. Then it is multiplied by these values. The result is then multiplied by 100 again to get back to the percentage. So, in the above example, 0.25 * 0.3 * 100 = 7.5. If two other values are entered, the division by 100 can be skipped, as it cancels out. However, the multiplication by 100 remains, so in the example, 7.5 / 25 * 100 = 30, likewise 7.5 / 30 * 100 = 25.

An example from business: A company made 20 percent of its revenue as profit in one year. If this profit increases by 10 percent the following year, then the profit is 2 percent higher, amounting to 22 percent of revenue. This assumes that the profit increase relates to the previous profit. If the profit increase were to be related to revenue, then the new profit would be 30 percent, but this must be stated explicitly, as it is not usually meant that way. This is easy to get confused, which is why it is prone to errors.
So the calculation 10% of 20% equals 2% is correct. The old profit is 20% of revenue, the new profit is 2% higher, so now it is 22% of revenue.

For clearer understanding: Percent means per one hundred, so one percent is one hundredth. One percent of a percent is then one ten-thousandth. Using the values from the first example: 25 times 30 is 750, so the result 7.5 percent can also be viewed as 750 ten-thousandths.
