Calculation of Percentage Change

A simple calculator for percentage changes. Enter two values: either the original value, the new value, or the percentage change. The missing third value will be calculated. For example, if a value increases from 2 to 3, this corresponds to a 50 percent increase. Conversely, you can also calculate how a value must change to achieve a specific percentage increase or decrease.

From to are % (percent)

Unlike a percentage share, a percentage change subtracts the original value from the new value. Mathematically, the percentage change is calculated using the following formula: (new value – old value) / old value × 100. This formula indicates by what percentage a value has changed compared to its original value. The nominal value (old value) serves as the reference point, while the numerator (new value - old value) represents the absolute difference. The result is multiplied by 100 to express the value as a percentage. A positive percentage change indicates an increase, while a negative percentage change indicates a decrease.

This calculation of percentage change is used in many practical and everyday situations. In finance, it is used to determine price gains or losses of stocks, currencies, or other investments. For example, if the value of a stock rises from €100 to €120, this corresponds to a percentage change of 20 percent. In commerce, it helps to analyze price changes, such as when a product is reduced from €50 to €35 in a sale, which corresponds to a price reduction of 30 percent. Percentage change is also a key tool in economics and statistics for calculating growth rates such as gross domestic product, sales increases, or inflation rates. Even in personal life, it makes it easy to determine how much expenses, income, or even body weight have changed over a specific period. Percentage change offers a clear and comparable representation of developments, independent of absolute figures.
