WR 136This Wolf-Rayet star once was a red supergiant with 30 solar masses, which 250 000 years ago blew its hull into space. Now, during the Wolf-Rayet phase, the hull is overtaken by the strong stellar wind, heats up and starts to glow again. The star is losing mass very quickly. In maybe 100 000 years WR 136 will explode as supernova, if still massive enough.Constellation: Cygnus Age: 4.5 million years Distance: 4700 light-years Spectral class: WN6 Visual magnitude: 7.48 Mass: 10 * Sun Back: List of big and giant stars part 2 |
