Calculate Free Fall

Free fall means falling without taking air resistance into account. This is sufficient as an approximation for the fall of compact objects over a height of a few meters, but after a longer fall or with light and large objects, the speed becomes so high that air resistance becomes increasingly important.

9.81 m/s² is the average value for the gravitational acceleration on Earth. For gravitational acceleration on other locations, see weight.

There are four different calculators available here, depending on what you want to calculate. Each of these calculators uses the acceleration of gravity that applies on Earth, which is 9.81 meters per second per second. This acceleration of gravity can also be changed.
• the first calculator works with distance and time, so you can determine how far something falls in a certain amount of time.
• the second calculator is for speed instead of distance, so it calculates how fast the falling object is after a certain amount of time.
• the third calculator is about falling time and height, i.e. how long an object has fallen and what difference in height it has covered. In fact, this calculator produces the same results as the first calculator, but works with different formulas and terms.
• the fourth calculator is for speed and height of fall, i.e. the speed reached when a certain distance has been traveled downwards or the final speed at which the body hits the ground.

distance = ½ * gravitational acceleration * time²
s = ½ g t²

distance: meters
gravitational acceleration: m/s²
time: seconds

Please enter two values, the third will be calculated.

velocity = gravitational acceleration * time
v = g t

velocity: m/s
gravitational acceleration: m/s²
time: seconds

Please enter two values, the third will be calculated.

falling time = √ 2 * height / gravitational acceleration
t(h) = √ 2h / g

falling time: seconds
gravitational acceleration: m/s²
height: meters

Please enter two values, the third will be calculated.

end velocity = √ 2 * gravitational acceleration * height
v(h) = √ 2 g h

end velocity: m/s
gravitational acceleration: m/s²
height: seconds

Please enter two values, the third will be calculated.

Here you can convert velocity units.
