Gray Tone - Calculator

Calculator for the gray tone of a color from the hexadecimal color values. The gray tone is a measure for the apparent brightness of a color. It is calculated using the differently or equally weighted proportions of red, green and blue. When weighted different, green is usually weighted the most, because it lies in the middle of the visible spectrum and is therefore best perceived by the human eye.

Color Weighting:

Example calculates the gray tone of purple. This is lighter for equal weighting, because purple dosn't have a green proportion, which would be given the greatest consideration if the weighting were different.

The proportions with different weightings can be changed to simulate different brightness perceptions. However, the three components must add up to exactly one. With equal weighting, all color components are considered equally, but this does not correspond to human perception. The standard weighting is according to sRGB, which is used in traditional television and video. HDTV and UHDTV are used for the corresponding formats, which emphasize green more strongly.
In image processing, you can select equal perceived to give red and green equal weight. Contrast-preserving, on the other hand, emphasizes visual contrasts more strongly.
Weighting with other values can also be useful, for example, in cases of color blindness. The most common form of this is red-green color blindness. There are two different types: Protanopia, where the red cones are missing in the eyes, and deuteranopia, where the green cones are missing. In protanopia, the weighting of red is significantly reduced, whereas in deuteranopia, red and green are given equal weight. Tritanopia is a blue-blindness, which is less common. All of these forms also exist as color deficiencies, where color is perceived less effectively but still perceived. Individual values must be determined in these cases.
