The Rotten Egg (OH231.8+4.2)

The red giant is about to die and casts away its hull since about 800 years. This hull has reached a diameter by now of 1.4 light-years. In about 1000 years it will become a planetary nebula, leaving behind a white dwarf.
Its beautiful name 'Rotten Egg' it has got because of the unusual high concentration of sulfur in the cloud. This cloud is also called Calabash Nebula, due to its shape.

Luminosity: 10 000 * Sun
