Mars

The Red Planet has its name from the iron oxide (rust) which gives it its color. It has a thin atmosphere and icy polar caps which could contain water ice. Besides there is some hope to find liquid water underneath its surface.

To change Mars into a life friendly planet (so called terraforming) is not impossible, but a task which would take several thousand years and an inconceivable amount of money. It would be better to keep Earth a life friendly planet.

Distance from the Sun: 1.48 AU
Mass: 0.11 * Earth
Diameter: 0.53 * Earth (6794 km)
Surface temperature: 210 kelvin
Orbit period: 687 days
Moons: 2 (Phobos, Deimos)
