S Orionis

This red giant of the type Mira pulsates with a period of 420 days. Thereby it changes its luminosity by the factor 500. The star is surrounded by an inner and an outer dust shell. Between these silicon monoxide molecules exist, which produce masers. The shell for a noticeable part consists of grains of aluminum oxide.
